BACKYARD BUTTERFLIES

September 2023 Edition

Hello reader,

I hope this finds you well and in good spirits, that your summer was pleasant and well-spent. I have noticed the tell-tale signs of summer ending and transitioning to autumn. The smell outside, the earlier sunset, the sounds and songs of the insects and birds, and color of the sunlight.

There is a lot that has happened this summer, all of which I hope and plan to share in the final newsletter next month.

Time got away from me this summer. The newsletters for June, July, and August did not happen as planned or intended. One of my many winter projects is to get back on track and plan ahead for next year.

Lastly, the photo featured above is of the first Giant Swallowtail that I hand raised from eggs provided by Board member April Shaw Fort. In July she had a female Giant Swallowtail visit her yard in Hillsborough. Eggs were laid upon common rue. We have common rue in our habitat as well, grown since the beginning of our butterfly gardening in 2013 with the hope we could raise Giants. I previously observed a passing through Giant Swallowtail in our habitat back in August of 2016. The Giant is a stray or migrant visitor to Orange County. Would be kind of cool if it were to get established in our habitat. P.S. We're still waiting for the Zebra Swallowtails to find our paw paw trees. Might take another decade for that, though.

Peace, Love, & Leps,

Fall Plant Sale Fundraiser

We hope that this year's Fall Plant Sale Fundraiser will have great weather for both days. Last year it was cut short due to a hurricane. If there is inclement weather again we will post on Facebook and send emails with information.

The Online Pre-Sale for pick-up orders will open at 10 AM on Sunday, September 24th. We recommend creating a Wishlist using the wishlist feature on our website instead of saving items to a shopping cart. The wishlist feature does require creating a user account on our website. The website will close around 11 PM on Saturday, September 30th.

While all plants are now listed on our website the exact quantities have not been added. Those numbers will be added at least one week before the Pre-Sale if not sooner. Some plants will only be available at the in-person sale. These plants will be designated as such on our website when quantities are added.

Awhile back on the Facebook page I asked what plants you would like to see us include in our collections. There were many great suggestions and I included some for the fall that can be grown this time of year. The rest will be included during the Spring sale. Please reach out to me if there are any particular plants you would like for us to include in our plant sales and we will do our best to include them.

If you have any questions about the upcoming Fall Plant Sale, let me know by email or by text.

Featured & New Plants for Fall

Volunteers Needed!

Our Fall Plant Sale Fundraiser needs esteemed volunteers to help out with general customer assistance duties such as cashiers, pick-up order assistants, plant mavens, and general assistants. All roles are 3.5 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday. A light lunch of soup and sandwich will be provided as well as snacks and beverages. We ask potential volunteers to sign up only if they are committed to attending as there will only be one slot per shift with no back-ups.

If you have questions please feel free to reach out before signing up.

Looking Ahead to 2024

We have decided to make a big change in the timing of our annual Spring Plant Sale Fundraiser and how we will schedule deliveries of online orders.

Starting in 2024 our Spring Plant Sale Fundraiser will be conducted during the month of May. By doing so it will free up the month of April to conduct Yard Consultations and permit us to participate in some early community outreach events. Most importantly it will allow the plants extra time to mature, for the spring weather to settle, and for us to offer all of our collection of plants at the same time. We will still have in-person plant sales on Saturdays and Sundays, and we will still have online shopping for pick-up orders and deliveries.

We will be discontinuing self-scheduling of online orders for delivery. Instead we will be geographically consolidating orders to be more efficient with our time and travel. We will contact you with either an exact or estimated date of delivery. We anticipate most orders will be delivered within 7-10 days of purchase, hopefully sooner. More details and information about our planned changes will be on our website and first newsletter next year.
