Our Experience

We are looking forward to adding this North Carolina native to our habitat as a host plant for the Eastern Black Swallowtail! It had proven to be a challenge to germinate from seed but we think we might have unlock its secrets.

It will be interesting to see how it works as a host plant. We have lot of choices for female Black Swallowtails to choose from. I’m thinking the leafy green leaves will be an excellent food source for hungry caterpillars.

2023 Update: We have established a patch of Golden Alexanders in our habitat. The plants are 3 years old and do very well in the heat and humidity. We’ve not yet found any caterpillars on the plants nor seen any evidence of it being used as a host. We offer fennel which is favored.
