Our Experience

We have grown dill for use as a host plant for Black Swallowtails. We recommend it if you enjoy the scent of this aromatic herb and don’t mind its intensity when hand raising caterpillars. Wherever you are raising your caterpillars it will smell like a pickle factory.

As far as performance, this plant does very well in cooler temperatures of the spring and proved to be an excellent food source up until July. It became unhappy once the summer heat arrived. It is also an annual so it will need to be replanted each year. We don’t know how easily it self-sows.
