About the Organization

I am writing on behalf of the NC State Extension Master Gardeners of Orange County – 2024 Intern Training Class. Our group’s Intern Project focuses on The Pollinator Garden at the Bonnie B. Davis Pollinator Demonstration Gardens at the Orange County Extension office in Hillsborough.
The Pollinator Garden, initiated in 2022, consists of two garden sections that require restoration and plant selection modification. Our project includes:
1. Educational Programs: Designing two projects to educate elementary-aged children. Garden signage that educates on pollination and how gardens can attract and help pollinators.
2. Garden Restoration and Expansion: Amending the soil, enhancing the garden with better signage, pollinator sipping stations and a pollinator sculpture, removing overgrown and aging plants, and adding new plants to ensure succession blooming throughout the growing season.
3. Plant Identification: Placing signage to identify all plants in the gardens.

Unfortunately, our limited budget restricts us from purchasing many plants. Your grant plants would make wonderful supplements to the two Pollinator gardens and allow us to offer different food sources and nesting areas for pollinators. They would also help us educate the public about plant selections for their home gardens to support pollinators. We will have a sign with a URL code that will allow visitors to have more information about this Pollinator Garden and how they can use plants in their landscapes to attract pollinators.

The Bonnie B. Davis demonstration gardens include several other types of gardens: Container, Native, Slope, Edibles, and a new Meadow garden, as well as the two Pollinator Gardens. Together these demonstration gardens are open to the public. We aim to arrange group tours with Master Gardener volunteers as guides, enhancing community engagement and education.
