About the Organization
This garden was established in Spring 2022 as a creative space for College of Visual and Performing Arts students within Peabody Park on the UNC Greensboro campus. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, exploring the intersection of nature and mental well-being, the study of both bee and non-bee pollinators, creativity and science, and the impact of small, supplementary pollinator habitats on pollinator abundance and biodiversity.
We are actively seeking to expand the garden space from 14′ x 40′ to 14′ x 60′ and to include a greater diversity of plant species to further enrich the site’s ecological value. The garden is located in an area that was formerly lawn space along the side of a paved pathway, and we aim to transform it into a vibrant pollinator-friendly habitat. Prior funding has allowed us to make progress toward our goals by supporting the purchase of native plant starts from local sources. We have an approved list of plants for the area, and the plants offered through this grant align perfectly with that list. By incorporating these species, we can enhance resources for pollinators and continue fostering education and awareness about the importance of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship in public spaces.
The garden also provides opportunities for students to engage with nature in meaningful ways. They can sit quietly or work in designated areas near the garden to take photographs, participate in on-site projects, or explore the use of landscape as material for art research. Additionally, students and visitors will be able to contribute to monitoring pollinator activity by submitting observations through a QR code on our garden signs, supporting citizen science efforts. In the future, we envision registering this area as a certified Monarch Waystation or using it as an introductory plot for the UNCG Plant and Pollinator Center.
With donated plants from this program, we aim to grow this unique pollinator-friendly habitat, engaging the UNC Greensboro community in meaningful efforts to support biodiversity and ecosystem health.
