BACKYARD BUTTERFLIES

September 2024 Edition

Hello reader,

I hope this finds you well and in good spirits, ready to take on the slog of autumn that has--or so it feels like--come early this year.

It's been a busy summer filled with moth surveys in under-reported counties, NABA butterfly counts, presentations, Annual Open House & Plant Swap, multiple Moth Nights at various venues. I'm working on an end of the season newsletter for October highlighting all that happened.

At the end of the month I will be having surgery that will have a 4-6 recovery time and include lifting restrictions of no more than 10 pounds and that I'm not to raise my arms over my head. I've been cleared to engage in activities that won't significantly raise my heart rate, and I'm encouraged to be active although I will essentially have T-Rex arms. I anticipate I will be able to cashier at the fall plant sale as I can sit or stand and keep my arms lowered while checking out customers.

We have many positions still open to assist at the fall plant sale. It would be awesome to have a full to near full roster of volunteers. Please spread the word about the plant sale with family and friends!

Peace, Love, & Leps,
Lior Carlson
Executive Director

Fall Plant Sale Info

FALL IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR PLANTING

Our second seasonal plant sale fundraiser is coming up for one day only on Saturday, October 5th. The sale will feature a new stock of paw paw trees, sweet shrubs, spicebushes, buttonbushes, and American beauty berries. We will also have new stock of plants that sold quickly during our spring plant sale.

We will have our usual assortment of keystone species, milkweeds, host and nectar plants available, but fewer species than at the spring sale. Our online shop website has been updated to reflect what species will be available. Sorry, no pre-sale pick-up orders or orders for delivery for this fundraiser. All shopping is in person during the hours listed above.

As we've had a knack for scheduling our sale during severe weather, if in the event we have another tropical storm, hurricane, or freak blizzard, we will cancel the sale. Intermittent rain, mist, or brisk autumn temperatures will not daunt us. Cross fingers we will have a balmy early autumn day!

We hope to see you at the sale!

Volunteer for Fall Plant Sale

Hang out with Cool People & Native Plants!

Come spend a Saturday morning or afternoon hanging out with awesome plant nerds and perhaps do a little work during our Fall Plant Sale Fundraiser!

The sale is somewhat weather dependent. If there is severe weather the event will be cancelled. Misty rain or intermittent showers will not daunt us. Be sure to dress in layers or something waterproof.

Perks: Volunteers will receive a complimentary Backyard Butterflies T-shirt, lunch, discount on plant purchases, beverages, and snacks. Often there are plants leftover and volunteers can adopt these remainders. Lunch will be catered by Guasaca and volunteers will have a choice of shredded chicken or vegetarian arepas.

Shift Times

Morning: 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM
Afternoon: 2:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Positions

Plant Maven
Do you love talking to people about native plants and would love to help them find the right ones to support butterflies and moths in their yard? You'd be a perfect Plant Maven!

• Loading Assistant
Need some light exercise while having brief, friendly conversations with strangers? Loading Assistant will help you achieve your daily steps while also providing arm strength through lifting and carrying of plant trays.

• Gopher
Have you thought to yourself that you'd be interested in any of these awesome volunteer opportunities but can't decide? The Gopher position is for you. You'll fill-in any position that's needed or you'll provide general assistance.

• Ornamental Hermit
Have you long dreamed that your real calling in life was to lurk around mysteriously on the manor grounds of some English noble while living full time in a quaint stone cottage, dressing daily like a wizard, but you were born in the wrong century? We can almost fulfill that dream for 3 hours with the position of Ornamental Hermit. Manor grounds are our little butterfly habitat. Cottage not provided. Butterfly or moth costume available to wear. You're free to educate, entertain, or scare (it is the spooky month!) visitors about the garden.

Merch Shop Open

We have gotten many requests to make our branded T-shirts available for purchase. You can now purchase either the classic logo or new circular logo T-shirt through our online shop. We are using Printful, a print-on-demand service that will directly mail the printed T-shirt to any address that you provide.

I can attest that the print quality of the T-shirts is excellent. There is minor shrinking after one or two washes, but nothing significant. Proceeds from T-shirts are used to support our organization.
