September-October Newsletter 2022

Backyard Butterflies

Greetings reader,
I hope this newsletter finds you well and in good spirits as we transition from summer to fall. It's been a very busy month with planning and preparing for two major fundraising events coming up in October. Come October 9th I will be hibernating like a Swallowtail chrysalis until next spring.

There will be one more newsletter for the 2022 butterfly season in October. A year in a review issue featuring highlights of this year's events.

John and I hope to see you at the Plant Sale or Moth Crawl, or both!

Peace, Love & Leps,
Lior Carlson
Executive Director

Moth Your Way Across Hillsborough

Saturday, October 8th • 7:30 to 10:30 PM

What is a moth crawl?

A moth crawl is like a pub crawl, without the alcohol. This is a family-friendly, all-ages, all are welcomed event. No previous moth experience required to participate.

There will be three moth light trapping locations in Hillsborough for you to visit in one night. The host at each location will have one or more moth collecting sheets set up to draw moths. Your hosts will help you identify moths on their collecting sheet(s), answer questions, and provide information about moths and the various other insects you will see.

Mothing is a weather dependent activity. Attendees will be provided updates by email about delayed start times or rescheduling in the event of rain.

About the Fundraiser

Funds raised from this event will go to sustain our North Carolina Under-reported County Mothing Project.

What is the NCUCMP?

The North Carolina Under-reported County Mothing Project (NCUCMP), administered by Executive Director Lior Carlson of Backyard Butterflies, is a multi-year citizen science survey of moths in those counties identified as under-reported based upon data publicly available from the Moths of North Carolina website. The definition of an under-reported county is having less than 100 species of moths.

Visit the NCUCMP Webpage

The Project's webpage to view observational data and learn more about how the project is conducted. The observational data is a work in progress. There are plans to include photos of the observed moths and to include more details about each species.
