We’re in the heart of our planting season, and this is the part where everything starts to take shape. Every pot we fill for the Spring Plant Sale Fundraiser becomes something more—habitat for Lepidoptera, support for pollinators, and a small but real step toward a healthier environment. It’s meaningful work where you can actually see the impact as you go, and honestly, it feels really good to be part of.

Often people think that money is the most important thing for a nonprofit, and usually it is. But sometimes what we really need is actual physical labor to accomplish the work that makes everything else possible. Backyard Butterflies is a community effort, and your hands help us do all the things we do—from our Plant Grants to the Hillsborough Moth Crawl and beyond. Planting is simple, meditative, and surprisingly satisfying, and no experience is needed—we’ll show you exactly what to do, and you’ll get into the rhythm quickly once you’re here!

As I shared in previous updates, my health has been destabilized due to delays in receiving vital medication, and chronic disease being well… chronic, my ability to do everything I normally do is limited right now. Because the timing of this aligns with our biggest push for the Spring Plant Sale Fundraiser, we could really use some extra help. Even an hour of your time for part of a shift—or coming out for just one shift—would make a huge difference in what we’re able to accomplish.

We’re planting every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in April, with two shifts each day from 9–11 AM and 1–3 PM. All planting happens outside under a canopy tent, so come dressed for the weather and ready to get your hands a little dirty. This fundraiser supports all of our programs and services, with every dollar going directly back into the work we do. No one here gets paid—we’re doing this because we care deeply about supporting Lepidoptera and serving our community.

Plus, not only will you get a first hand experience with this year's Spring Plant Collection, there's always a few extra plants that will make their way home with you!
