DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 5th Annual Open House & Plant Swap. Learn how to create a butterfly habitat in your backyard and interact with butterflies.Tickets are donation-based with a suggested donation of $5 per ticket. Please visit the event webpage to get tickets. \nThis event is one day only\, rain or shine. Parking is extremely limited. Please carpool if you can! \nThe Open House\nOnce a year we open our home to allow the public to tour our backyard butterfly habitat so that you can learn how to create a butterfly and pollinator friendly space\, garden\, or habitat. \nOur primary source of funding for our organization is through the sale of common to rare butterfly host and nectar plants. We will have a selection of butterfly nectar and host plants available for purchase. We will also have a limited amount of free plants available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nThe Plant Swap\nThe Plant Swap is our way of helping you and other members of our community to acquire plants at no cost to help you get started or supplement your garden. You are welcome to bring plants from your garden to swap with other participants. \nOur Story\nWe are a small non-profit that provides education\, community outreach\, and help people create backyard butterfly-friendly habitats. We began transforming our two acres in 2012 and our efforts have been a work in progress ever since. We have hand-raised almost 20 different butterfly species from plants either naturally occurring or placed within our habitat. Our habitat has a lifetime count of 71 species of butterfly observed. \nWe welcome adults and children. We love all pets but please leave them at home today. We do not have a public restroom at this time. All areas are grass covered and fairly level. Please contact us if you have any questions or have special needs.

SUMMARY:Butterfly Day at Big Bloomers Flower Farm
DESCRIPTION:Caterpillar Workshop at Butterfly Day \nCome join us for our annual Butterfly Day hosted at Big Bloomers Flower Farm in Sanford! We will have our usual set-up and display\, conduct a free caterpillar raising workshop (normally $25)\, and give a talk about creating your own backyard butterfly habitat. We will also do a butterfly release in the afternoon if we have them available. \nNo registration is necessary. Caterpillar availability for workshops is subject to Mother Nature. The workshop is conducted on a first-come\, first-serve basis\, unless there are more people than available caterpillars. We will then do a lottery drawing. \nIn addition to the workshops and talks\, there will be butterfly DIY crafts and activities for kids and adults. \nBig Bloomers has a vast assortment of butterfly nectar and host plants\, and is the primary nursery we have used since 2012 to create our backyard habitat. They have multiple species of milkweed that is caterpillar safe!

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Long Leaf Pine Festival at Harris Lake County Park! We will have a limited selection of host and nectar plants available for purchase. As always\, we will bring with us any live caterpillars or butterflies that are currently available from our habitat. \nWe will have a special exhibit about woodland butterflies. Woodland butterflies are a unique group of lepidoptera as they prefer or utilize other sources of food than flower nectar. Finding them for observation can be a bit tricky and typically requires going to remote locations.
